St Georgenberg Abbey is among Tirol’s oldest and most revered pilgrimage sites. The mountain monastery is reached via a medieval bridge from Fiecht. A highlight of any active cultural holiday, the route through the dramatic Wolfsklamm gorge – with its waterfalls, stairways and wooden footbridges – offers a memorable hike to this spiritual landmark.
Once the largest silver mine in the world, the Schwaz Silver Mine played a key role in building the wealth of the Habsburg Empire. Today, visitors can travel 800m underground aboard a mine train to explore the historic Sigmund-Erbstollen tunnel – offering a vivid insight into the world of medieval mining.
Step back in time in Schwaz, once the silver capital of Europe and the second largest city in the Habsburg Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries. On a free guided tour, stroll through historic streets and discover how silver and copper mining shaped the town’s remarkable rise. Local museums and exhibitions offer deeper insights into this golden age.
Not far from Schwaz lies the historic salt-mining town of Hall in Tirol – a medieval trading hub famed for its salt and silver. Hasegg Castle is home to the Hall Mint Museum, where the thaler was first minted – the coin that later inspired the dollar. Explore original minting machines and climb the striking mint tower.
